GS-441524 for FIP: the antiviral that made a fatal disease curable

GS-441524 is the molecule at the centre of the FIP revolution. Here is how it works, what doses the literature uses for each form, the honest problem with the unregulated market, and why the dose is not a number to take from a website.

Short answer: GS-441524 is a nucleoside analog that blocks the FIP virus from copying its genome. It is the single most important reason FIP is now curable, with published success rates above 80%. It's given over an 84-day course, dosed by weight and by form (higher for wet, ocular, and neurological disease). The biggest real-world risk isn't the drug — it's product quality, because most of the supply is unregulated.

How it works

The FIP virus, like all coronaviruses, has to copy its own RNA to reproduce. GS-441524 is a nucleoside analog — a decoy building block. When the viral copying machinery (its RNA-dependent RNA polymerase) picks up GS-441524 instead of a real nucleotide, replication stalls. Starve the virus of the ability to copy itself, and the immune-driven damage that defines FIP can finally subside.

Crucially, GS-441524 is also the active core of remdesivir — remdesivir is a prodrug the body converts into GS-441524. They are two routes to the same active molecule, which is why they're discussed together.

What the evidence shows

GS-441524 is the best-evidenced FIP antiviral by a wide margin. A systematic review of the 2018–2024 literature put overall success around 84.6%, and more recent cohorts report survival above 90% with low relapse. The treatment-evidence page collects those numbers with their sources.

Dose — and why we won't give you a single number

Effective GS-441524 dosing is not one figure. Published protocols scale the dose to the disease:

  • Effusive (wet) and dry FIP sit at the lower-to-middle end.
  • Ocular FIP needs more, to reach the eye.
  • Neurological FIP needs the most, because the drug has to cross the blood–brain barrier in adequate amounts.

Dose is also per-kilogram, given once daily, and adjusted as the cat grows or as the picture changes. This is exactly why a flat "give X mg/kg" instruction from a website — including this one — is unsafe. The real risk: an unregulated market

Here is the part the marketing skips. In much of the world, GS-441524 is sold without regulatory oversight, and independent testing has shown that matters.

A 2024 analysis in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association tested 127 unlicensed antiviral products from 30 producers. It found (read the study):

  • Injectable products averaged 39% MORE GS-441524 than their labels claimed; only 2 of 87 fell within an acceptable range of the stated content.
  • Oral products were wildly variable — 58% contained less than labelled (averaging 39% short), which risks under-dosing and, potentially, drug resistance.
  • Injectable solutions were extremely acidic (average pH ~1.3), consistent with the painful injection-site sores owners report.
  • Some products sold as one thing actually contained remdesivir instead.

The lesson isn't that the drug fails — it's that the dose you think you're giving may not be the dose in the vial. That single fact is the strongest argument for sourcing through a legitimate, tested, veterinarian-supervised channel wherever one exists.

Legality and legitimate access

This is changing fast and varies by country:

  • United Kingdom and Australia: legally available as compounded/licensed preparations of remdesivir and GS-441524 through veterinarians.
  • United States: no FDA-approved product yet, but since 2024 the FDA has said it will not enforce approval requirements against veterinarian-prescribed compounded GS-441524 for FIP (under its compounding guidance), and it is available through at least one compounding pharmacy on prescription.
  • Elsewhere: often only the unregulated market — which is exactly where the quality problem above lives.
