Do dog and cat longevity supplements work? A graded audit of the shelf

We went compound by compound through the ingredients sold as pet longevity supplements and graded each on honest evidence — including the ones with a beautiful mechanism and no outcome data. A field guide for the sceptical buyer.

The pet longevity supplement aisle is booming, and most of it is sold on a particular trick: describe a compound's mechanism in glowing, sciency detail, and let you assume that a good mechanism means a proven effect. It does not. This article grades the shelf on what actually matters — evidence of an outcome — and is honest about how often that evidence is missing.

One frame to carry throughout: for almost every compound below, the best data is in mice or humans, not dogs or cats, and it is about a biomarker, not a lifespan. That gap is the single most important thing the marketing leaves out.

The grading, briefly

We use four honest tiers, the same ones on our science page: strong-human (replicated randomized human trials), emerging (human trials, mixed or early), early (mostly preclinical), and animal-model (signals only in animals so far). Note that none of these say "proven in dogs or cats," because for none of them is that true.

Urolithin A — emerging-to-strong (in humans)

The best of the bunch, and the reason is simple: it has replicated randomized human trials. Urolithin A activates mitophagy, the recycling of worn-out mitochondria, and in trials it improved muscle strength and mitochondrial markers in middle-aged and older adults (Singh et al., Cell Reports Medicine, 2022). That is far more than most of this shelf can claim. The honest caveat: those trials were in humans, on a muscle-function endpoint, not a lifespan one, and the pet data is thin. Ca-AKG — animal-model only

Calcium alpha-ketoglutarate has a genuinely striking mouse study: started in middle age, it extended lifespan and compressed morbidity — fewer frail, sick months at the end (Asadi Shahmirzadi et al., Cell Metabolism, 2020). Exciting — and entirely in mice. There is no human lifespan trial and no companion-animal outcome trial. Sold with confidence it has not earned. Full write-up.

Spermidine — emerging, and a cautionary tale

Spermidine is the compound to point at whenever someone says "the mechanism is amazing." It is one of the best-characterised natural inducers of autophagy — a beautiful, deeply-studied mechanism. And when it was taken into a large, rigorous human trial (SmartAge) for cognition, it did not show the hoped-for benefit (Schwarz et al., SmartAge). A gorgeous mechanism, a disappointing outcome. Fisetin — early

Fisetin is a senolytic — it clears "zombie" senescent cells — and the preclinical story is genuinely exciting: in aged mice, intermittent dosing reduced senescence markers and extended lifespan (Yousefzadeh et al., EBioMedicine, 2018). Human trials are small and ongoing; pet outcome data does not exist. Promising, early, oversold. Full write-up.

Resveratrol — emerging, with an honesty problem baked in

Resveratrol is the cautionary tale about bioavailability. Even when you swallow a lot, so little reaches your bloodstream intact — oral bioavailability is well under 1% — that much of the glowing cell-culture data may simply never apply to a living animal at realistic doses (Walle et al., Drug Metabolism and Disposition, 2004). A compound can be real in a dish and irrelevant in a body. Full write-up.

Turkey tail (PSK/PSP) — strong (for immune function, in humans)

The immune-support mushroom with an actual track record: PSK has been used as a clinical cancer adjuvant in Japan since the 1970s, and its mechanism — activating NK cells and other immune players via TLR2 — is well characterised (Lu et al., PNAS, 2011). Strong human safety history, real mechanism. But note the honest boundary: that is immune evidence in people, and it is emphatically not a claim that turkey tail treats disease in your pet. Reishi — emerging

Reishi β-glucans modulate immune signalling, with a randomized human trial showing shifts in immune-cell populations versus placebo. Promising, single-trial, biomarker-level — emerging, not proven. Full write-up.

So, do they work?

The honest composite answer:

  • A few have real human evidence for a specific biomarker or function — urolithin A and turkey tail lead here.
  • Most are animal-model or early — genuinely interesting, genuinely unproven.
  • Almost none have companion-animal outcome data, and none have been shown to extend the lifespan of a dog or a cat.
  • Mechanism is not proof, and spermidine is the standing proof of that.

That does not make the shelf worthless. It makes it a place to shop sceptically, reading the evidence tier rather than the marketing adjective, and steering by the reality that for your specific animal, most of this is extrapolation.

And it is worth remembering what beats the entire shelf on evidence: keeping your animal lean, their teeth clean, and screening early. Those are better-evidenced than anything in this list.
